MSA PASS to Implement Y2K Compliance Upgrade for Republic Technology

PITTSBURGH, PA - April 29, 1999 – MSA Process Automation Solutions and Services, Inc. (MSA PASS) has received a contract to implement a Year 2000 upgrade for Republic Technology’s CAST-ROLL™ facility. Patrick J. Gallagher, Vice President of MSA PASS, made the announcement today.

MSA PASS had just completed a detailed Y2K compliance upgrade plan for the Republic CAST-ROLL™ facility. This plan was developed in conjunction with Republic’s own process control personnel. The upgrade includes the control systems for the LMF, VTD, Caster, Reheat and Rolling Mill components of the CAST-ROLL™ Facility, Mr. Gallagher explained. The existing system consists of a Windows for Workgroups-based FactoryLink system integrated with a VAX OpenVMS server system.

Mediation efforts will consist of upgrading the version level of the FactoryLink system and porting the application over to Windows NT-based platforms. The OpenVMS FactoryLink application will also be upgraded and the network transport layer modified to TCP/IP. In addition to resolving any Y2K compliance issues, the new operating systems and software will ease maintenance issues, improve reliability and provide for greater enhancement capability.

The CAST-ROLL™ Facility receives ladles of molten steel from the Electric Furnaces, refines the steel in the LMF and VTD facilities, casts the steel in the four-strand bloom caster and then rolls the steel into products which are processed at other Republic finishing facilities.
